LCG #173 – Mika Tyyskä (Mr Fastfinger) interview

LCG-173-20121102.mp3 (41min 42s)

Hello,

It seems that the countries from northern Europe have something special to have so many incredible guitar players, Mika Tyyskä from Finland and also known as Mr Fastfinger is one of them.

“In Motion” is a great music album full of superb guitar playing. Yes you will hear some heavy shredding in there but this is NOT your typical shredder’s album, it’s way more than that. Mika’s music is both intriguing and enjoyable.

Extracts from “In Motion” played before the interview:

  • Little Wind
  • Motion Beat
  • Beach Turtles
  • Unravel

Enjoy,

Pierre.

LCG #158 – Marty Friedman interview

LCG-158-20120626.mp3

Hello,

Marty Friedman (aka @_martyfriedman_) is one of those guitar super stars who seems to be going from one project to another non-stop.

I had the pleasure to catch him on Skype for the interview you will hear in this episode. He was in Tokyo, I was in Paris so no surprise the sound is kind of weird here and there.

Extracts played before the interview:

  • Weapons Of Ecstacy (Bad D.N.A.)
  • School Spirit Delin  (Bad D.N.A.)
  • Aitakatta (Tokyo Jukebox 2)
  • Canon A La Koto (Tokyo Jukebox 2)

Enjoy,

Pierre.

LCG #155 – Simon McBride interview

LCG-155-20120603.mp3

Hello,

I was very happy to interview Simon McBride (aka @smcbridemusic) via Skype as his music kept on showing up when I did some listening in shuffle mode to go through all the music I receive.

And each time it happened I said to myself  ”I really MUST have this guy in the show!”.

That’s the method I use: I hit play and if the music I hear interests me I take a note. When it happened several times for the same artist, it really means I am on to something.

Extracts played before the interview:

  • Devil’s Road (Since Then)
  • Tear Down Your Soul (Since Then)
  • Down To The Wire (Nine Lives)
  • Rich Man Falling (Nine Lives)

Happy listening,

Pierre.

PS: note that toward the end of the interview there is a weird offset between our voices so it sounds like we are talking at the same time and like there were some long silences during our conversation. I had to way to correct that after the fact. Sorry about that.

I cannot recommend enough his latest CD “24 Hours” which is shock full of good songs, excellent singing and awesome guitar parts.

Extracts from his album “24 hours” played before the interview:

  • Get It On
  • 24 Hours
  • I Don’t Know Why
  • Help Me

Richie’s guitar pics right before the show (notice the inboard tuner around the volume pot):

Enjoy,

Pierre.

PS: thanks Michelle (aka @mholland5001) for putting me in contact with Richie’s management to organize the interview.

LCG-143-20120310.mp3

Hello,

Last week I published the Bryan Beller interview in episode 142, this week none other than Guthrie Govan himself.

As you can guess I was thrilled to speak to Guthrie who is one of the srongest rising star of guitar playing. It’s the kind of musician you hear about in guitar magazine way before you hear their music then you discover what they do and you’re blown away!

Yes, Guthrie is THAT good.

This musician is only 19 but is showing a musical maturity way beyond his age. His latest album (no, it is not his first CD, it’s the third one!) “Atoms And Space” is a great CD I took a lot of pleasure to discover. For sure Hedras is only getting started.

Well, this gem comes from the Toronto based trio called Danko Jones. The band was in Paris to do some promo for their latest album “Below The Belt” and I had the pleasure to talk to Danko, their singer and guitar player.

Hello,

None other than Nuno Bettencourt in this episode!! I just had today the opportunity to meet and interview this incredible musician I have been a fan of since the early days of Extreme. He was in Paris to play Bercy with Rihanna.
So still hot from my Zoom H2 digital recorder, here it is unedited and unabridged, the Nuno interview.
Here is a blurry picture I took just before the interview (see how proud I am on my face??):

LCG #050 – Vernon Reid interview

Direct link to the mp3 file: LCG-050-20100313.mp3

Hello,

This is the ONE YEAR anniversary episode of The Guitar Channel!!
Let me tell you it was quite a ride the past 12 months. Even in my wildest dreams when I started I did not think about being able to meet so many great musicians, from Steve Vaï to Pierre Bensusan??? No Way!! And here we are, 50 episodes later with many interviews and guitar soundseeings, one year later, going stronger than ever. :-)
Back in december I had the honor to interview Vernon Reid, a great musician and an incredible guitar player, when he was in Paris on tour with Living Colour. I think it is pretty appropriate to publish his interview for this episode #50 AND the one year anniversary.
An iPhone picture taken during the soundcheck:
The VERY impressive equiment Vernon uses on stage:

As an added bonus for this special episode, I am VERY proud to debut a new music for the intro with a beautiful instrumental “Der aKtivist” piece from Jean-Michel Kajdan (a french guitar player you can hear in episodes #15, #42 and #43 in french). THANKS a ton Jean-Michel for allowing me to use your music.
If you want to hear “Der aKtivist” in its entirety, you have to install the free iPhone/iPod Touch app JMK to stream it. I encourage you to do so as this instrumental is really great from the first second until the very last.

LCG #038 – Mattias "IA" Eklundh interview

Direct link to the mp3 file: LCG-038-20091209.mp3

Hello,

Meeting with Mattias “IA” Eklundh was an experience. The guitar player for the swedish power-trio Freak Kitchen is very funny and manages to be also very serious in his answers at the same time.
I have to admit I discovered very recently the music from Freak Kitchen (shame on me, I know!) and I was more than anxious to discuss with such a guitar player.

They will be in France in 2010 (February 2nd at La Maroquinerie in Paris) so don’t miss them if they come near you. Check the tour dates on their website.
With the authorization of Mattias, I played two extracts in this show:
  1. “Sick” from the latest Freak Kiychen album “Land Of The Freaks”
  2. “Mumbo Jumbo” from IA solo album “Freak Guitar”

LCG #032 – Dave Weiner interview

Direct link to the mp3 file: LCG-032-20091110.mp3

Hello,

As a follow-up to episode #025 (where you can listen to a Steve Vaï interview) I did a Skype interview with his guitar player for the last 10 years, Dave Weiner.

The 35 minutes plus conversation was recorded through Skype so please excuse the couple of drop-outs you will hear here and there.

Thanks a ton to Dave who took the time to answer all my questions.

Watch out on his website for his up-coming solo album very soon…

Happy listening,

Pierre.

LCG #025 – Steve Vaï interview

Direct link to the mp3 file: LCG-025-20091003.mp3

Hello,

For the first time (and most probably not the last) this episode is 100% in english. It is the same Vaï interview available on show #024 but with an english intro and outro. This way all the english speaking people will be able to get the full “LCG” experience. :-)

During the 30min interview, Steve talks about his latest live CD/DVD “Where The Wild Things Are”, his music, his band, his guitars, etc…

PLEASE let me know what you think: post a comment here, drop me a line at pjournel@gmail.com, on Twitter @theguitarchnnl or on the fanpage www.facebook.com/theguitarchannel.

Happy listening,

Pierre.
